Overview
When given this assignment, I was very overwhelmed because we were advised to gather all of the work I've done throughout the semester and put it into an online portfolio. The semester moved so fast that I never sat down and realized how much work I actually accomplished. Within every tab in the table of contents lies a link and reflection on that specific piece of work. With the variety of major papers given, I learned that understanding your audience is a big aspect in how you should write a paper and what information should be placed within the essay. The class also taught me the difference between synthesis and analysis. After reviewing all the work I achieved and effort I put into the class, I believe I learned a lot more about how to correctly write, how to read and understand the meaning behind a passage and how to research information at a college level.
What I learned about Reading
Over the course of the semester, we had to read numerous pieces for our discussion posts and an extensive number of articles for our discourse community. The skills of understanding, synthesizing and analyzing passages are important in this course because I was able to support my works at a more enhanced level. The biggest method I learned in this course, referring to reading was how to categorize masses of information, which aided me to comprehend information that was needed and imperative.
What I learn about Writing
Throughout the semester, I learned how to write to achieve different purposes and how to appeal to different readers. All of the writing assignments I had this semester dealt with diverse principles and assorted audiences. For example, even though the Annotated Bibliography and Literature Review had the same discourse community, their purposes were unique and they were attracted to different audiences. The class taught me how to write a response to other classmate’s ideas on the same readings I read. This depicted me different writing styles of different students. Reading other student’s writing allowed me to gain a new perspective and helped me have new ideas and outlooks on writing scenarios. The biggest writing item I learned from this course was how to incorporate new ideas and views into my writing, permitting me to make my writing more successful and focused.
What I learned about Research and Argument
Entering English Composition 1102, I knew I would learn about research and arguments but I would have never guested that I would learn such an abundance amount. I was taught how to actively and critically research effective information in order to add credibility and improve my essays. I learned how to properly utilize the UCF online database, which helped me a great deal while writing my multiple essays throughout the semester. As far as discussing arguments, I learned that it is vital for you to have a sturdy argument in order for your dispute to be effective and understood. Greene and Devitt depicted the importance of comprehension in order to appropriately frame your argument.
What I learned about Synthesis and Analysis
Within the discussion posts I had to do, I had to first summarize the passage I read and then further elaborate by analyzing and synthesizing the articles purpose. I learned that in analysizing, you break down the information and interpret it into your own words and meanings. The discussions posts were all in my own words with my own thoughts and opinions about what I had read. In analysis, I defined the pieces of work that I read by adding definition to my description or added an individual thought in the way I deciphered the work. Along with analysis, synthesis is the understanding of the work which is then developed by my own reflections. I learned that analysis and synthesis are a combination of each other, which helped me progress and further my literature profession. My journals depicts my progressive development in analyzing and synthesizing the articles as I became more content with my pieces of work and my understanding of the meanings within each writing. Synthesis and Analysis taught me how to read between the lines of pieces of work and be able to understand the meaning by filtering the passage and conjoining my own thoughts.
What I learned about Revision
Revisions in this class were a big help for me. Revisions allowed me to see the point of views of other classmates, which assists me in my work because it shows me how to think outside my comfort zone and think of more ideas for my own paper. I feel that the peer reviews and conferences were very helpful because I was able to take the critiques and suggestions to better revise my work. The feedback that I receive from my group helps me because they see my paper in a different way, giving me more valuable advice. The class taught me techniques for organizing papers, allowing the paper to flow at a more efficient pace, making them more effective. Revisions taught me how to take both negative and positive comments and apply them to create a meaningful and beneficial revision.
Connections to Future Classes and Careers
Growing up, English was always my favorite subject. I enjoy being able to express myself through my writing- I always put a large number of details within my pieces. Originally, I was an Education major, hence the Early Childhood discourse community but I realized that I could not realistically be a teacher everyday because I have a small attention span. I am currently a Hospitality major and minoring in Event Management. This English course has helped me in future classes by being taught how to narrow down information and focus on the main points. This will come in handy in the Hospitality industry because everything is so detailed.
As for a grade for my portfolio, I will propose an A. I have followed the rubric step by step and made sure I inserted every aspect to show my work within the course. In my portfolio, you will see my reflections, my discussion posts, my four major papers and my peer reviews and drafts. I have put a lot of time and effort into this portfolio and am very proud of the final product. I believe my portfolio is a good example of my progression throughout the semester and it depicts my understanding of course objectives.
Reflections of Portfolio
After weeks and hours of putting together the portfolio, my final project is finally complete. I am officially done with English Composition 1102. Even though this portfolio was very time consuming, I am very proud of the work that was put into it. It is interesting to see how far I have come in my work and how the portfolio turned out. Not going to lie, It was hard work putting together all of my semesters work, but definitely worth it in the end. Overall, I am very satisfied and confident in the final portfolio. I’ve had a successful and constructive semester and plan to continue the skills I learned in future college level courses.
To anyone viewing my portfolio, please enjoy!
